چکیده

AdaBoost has proved to be an effective method to improve the performance of base classifiers both theoretically and empirically. However, previous studies have shown that AdaBoost might suffer from the overfitting problem, especially for noisy data. In addition, most current work on boosting assumes that the combination weights are fixed constants and therefore does not take particular input patterns into consideration. In this paper, we present a new boosting algorithm, “WeightBoost”, which tries to solve these two problems by introducing an inputdependent regularization factor to the combination weight. Similarly to AdaBoost, we derive a learning procedure for WeightBoost, which is guaranteed to minimize training errors. Empirical studies on eight different UCI data sets and one text categorization data set show that WeightBoost almost always achieves a considerably better classification accuracy than AdaBoost. Furthermore, experiments on data with artificially controlled noise indicate that the WeightBoost is more robust to noise than AdaBoost.

Regularized Boost for Semi-Supervised Learning

Semi-supervised inductive learning concerns how to learn a decision rule from a data set containing both labeled and unlabeled data. Several boosting algorithms have been extended to semi-supervised learning with various strategies. To our knowledge, however, none of them takes local smoothness constraints among data into account during ensemble learning. In this paper, we introduce a local smo...

Improving the performance of recommender systems in the face of the cold start problem by analyzing user behavior on social network

The goal of recommender system is to provide desired items for users. One of the main challenges affecting the performance of recommendation systems is the cold-start problem that is occurred as a result of lack of information about a user/item. In this article, first we will present an approach, uses social streams such as Twitter to create a behavioral profile, then user profiles are clusteri...

SERBoost: Semi-supervised Boosting with Expectation Regularization

The application of semi-supervised learning algorithms to large scale vision problems suffers from the bad scaling behavior of most methods. Based on the Expectation Regularization principle, we propose a novel semi-supervised boosting method, called SERBoost that can be applied to large scale vision problems. The complexity is mainly dominated by the base learners. The algorithm provides a mar...

MDL Regularizer: A New Regularizer based on the MDL Principle

This paper proposes a new regularization method based on the MDL (Minimum Description Length) principle. An adequate precision weight vector is trained by approximately truncating the maximum likelihood weight vector. The main advantage of the proposed regularizer over existing ones is that it automatically determines a regularization factor without assuming any specific prior distribution with...
